Do you love mango? I do!
But awkward to cut with it's oval shape and huge seed in the center.
Don't you fret, here's my step by step on how I cut a mango without freaking out and having it slip on the floor! Or wasting half of it getting the skin off.
Ripe = Mostly red/orange/yellow skin and a little soft to the touch
Supplies: Fork (I like to use a large serving fork) Knife Peeler Cutting board Mango |
Start by peeling off all the skin. |

Peeler - Kuhn Rikon Original Swiss Peeler $4
It's the best peeler, it takes very little skin off. America's Test Kitchen recommended and I've seen Martha Stewart use it on her cooking show. I love it, I've even bought it for a few friends. Your favorite kitchen product/tool is a great gift for your friends that also love to cook or bake.
Cut a small piece off the bottom so it stands up. |
Now cut pieces of the mango meat off. |
Keep cutting around the seed. (Bonus for you - Since you cut it, you get to eat any leftover mango meat that's still stuck on the seed. Holding with the fork, eat like it's corn on the cob.) |
Dice or slice how you like it! |

If you need super thin slices you can use a mandolin after peeling.
If you want a fancy look and are serving half a mango to each person. Without peeling, cut straight down (around the seed) on the two fatter sides (the mango cheeks). Then use the tip of your knife and slice the meat NOT through the skin, making a grid. Now, flip it inside out!
